Here’s a story on BBC about South African women forming a lesbian-only soccer team. They are playing to eradicate the prejudices against homosexuals in South Africa. The team is a refuge for the women from the discrimination, verbal abuse, assaults, and even rape in their local towns. The team is named the “Chosen Few” and is forced to play on a dilapidated field near Johannesburg.
Depressed? Now for the part of the article that doesn’t make you want to slice your wrists. The field doesn’t have any grass. They could have at least laid down some astroturf carpet to make the ladies feel at home. They are excellent at kicking the balls, but the coach is worried that his girls won’t be great at ball handling. It seems that the scissor kick is quite popular on this team. I guess soccer is the African equivalent to softball in the United States…
